W. Paul Tyler "Poor Ole Paul" of Tyler's Jefferson Motors of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 6:50 P.M. Saturday, March 11, 2017. He was born August 10, 1923 in Keenes, Illinois. His parents were George Shelby Tyler and Mabel Coil. He married Jeanette Amelia Hassebrock on June 29, 1946 at Faith Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois.
A visitation will be held from 11:00 A.M. until service time, 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at Faith Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois.
A Celebration of Life Service will follow the visitation at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at Faith Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois officiated by Pastor Josepha Lecke. Inurnment will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens at a later date.
Paul is survived by his wife of 70 years, Jeanette Tyler of Mount Vernon, Illinois; daughter, Terri P. Tyler of Nashville, Tennessee; and son, Michael P. Tyler of Woodlawn, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Paul went to Washington D.C. and worked for the FBI in the fingerprinting division. Then Paul served in the United States Army Airforce during World War II. He was a gunnery instructor for the B-17, Flying Fortress. He was a sergeant in the 3021st Air Force Base Unit. He was Honorably Discharged March 9, 1946 from Camp Shelby, Mississippi. He went on to graduate at the University of Illinois on June 18, 1950 with a bachelor of science in accountancy. After his college graduation, he and his father bought out Bubby Rhodes and began as car dealers for Rambler, Pontiac, GMC, and Cadillac in 1951. He subsequently earned a degree in dealership management from the General Motors Institute. He and his father acquired the Buick Franchise in 1959. He served as director of I.A.T.A. (Illinois Automobile and Truck Association) from 1964-1968. Paul was elected to the Pontiac motor Division Dealer Council in 1966. Later he served on the City of Mount Vernon Planning Commission. Then later, he served as a director of the First Bank and Trust Company from 1979-1993. He and his father, George were GM dealers from 1951 to 1995. He became a Toyota Dealer in 1989 until 2013. In 1985 the business was moved from the Jordan Street location to the current location at the intersection of I-57, I-64 and Illinois Route 15. His son, Michael is now the Buick, GMC, and Toyota Dealer at that location. He has been recognized for his career from Cadillac Motor Division for 44 years of service, as well as from Pontiac and GMC, and from Buick from 1959 to 1995. He was a business man investing in both real estate and securities markets. Paul was a family man. He loved boating and worldwide vacations.
