Virgil's Story

Virgil J. "Bill" Lee, 101, of Mt. Vernon and formerly of McLeansboro passed away 3:17 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017, at SSM Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2017, at Harre Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017, at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro with the Rev. Aaron Evrard officiating. Burial will be at St. Clements Catholic Cemetery in McLeansboro.
He was born Jan. 17, 1916, in Granite City. He spent his later youth years living in rural Hamilton County and graduated from Macedonia High School in 1934. He was the son of John Lee and Effie Mae (Cole) Lee. He married Delores Mayberry on July 4, 1949, and Virgil resided in McLeansboro until after his wife's death on Jan. 30, 2002. He then resided at Green Tree Assisted Living Center in Mt. Vernon until his death.
He worked at the McLeansboro Elders Garment Factory and later was employed at the McLeansboro Post Office for 29 years until his retirement as superintendent on Dec. 31, 1976.
He was protestant by faith.
Virgil served in the U.S. Civilian Conservation Corp from Oct. 10, 1936 to Dec. 23, 1938, with assignments in Decatur, Petersburg, Camp McCoy, Wis., and and Dubois, Idaho.
He was very active in fast pitch softball, basketball and later slow pitch softball.
He was in the U.S. Army during World War II from Feb. 23, 1942 until Jan. 1, 1946, serving as Master Sargent in the European and Pacific campaigns, receiving two bronze battle stars in European Campaign. He served duty in Korea from Oct. 18, 1950 to July 23, 1951, during the Korean War, receiving a BR star.
He is survived by daughters, Marcia Lewis of Eldorado Springs, Mo., and Trisha Barczewski and husband Mark of Mt. Vernon; sons, Mark Lee and wife Nancy of Collinsville, Gary Lee and wife Marvina of Belleville and Greg Lee and wife Lisa of Clinton, Mo.; grandchildren, Frank Lewis of Eldorado Springs and Kevin Lewis of Torrington, Conn., Michelle and Michael Lee of Collinsville, Derek and Nicole Lee of Clinton, Mo. and Danielle and Carter Barczewski of Mt. Vernon; one sister, Edna Gordon of Crown Point, Ind.; brother-in-law, Joe Mayberry of McLeansboro; sister-in-law, Phyllis Mayberry of Mt. Vernon; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Dolores.
Memorials may be made to St. Clement's Cemetery Fund.
