Merritt L. Strickland, 99, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 6:15 P.M. August 20, 2017 at his residence in Mount Vernon, Illinois. He was born June 30, 1918 in Mount Vernon, Illinois to the late Francis Marion and Sarah Etta (Freeman) Strickland. Merritt married Mary M. Moore on May 24, 1941 in Chaffee, Missouri. They were blessed with 73 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on June 22, 2014.
Merritt is survived by his son, Steve Strickland and wife, Janis of Mount Vernon, Illinois; daughter-in-law, Barb Strickland of Mount Vernon, Illinois; grandchildren, Stephanie Ward and husband, Nick of Abilene, Texas, Mike Strickland and wife, Kathy of Arvada, Colorado, Amanda Sheraden and husband, Quent of Carbondale, Illinois, Kenny Strickland of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Kristi Ortiz and husband, Darien of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Kelli McKay of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Amber Smith and husband, Adrian of Santa Clarita, California, Stephen Strickland of Edwardsville, Illinois, and Brook Dickneite and husband, Todd of Saint Louis, Missouri; great-grandchildren, Jason Ward, Nancy Ward, Julian Strickland, Megan Strickland, Maryna Strickland, Trenton Sheraden, Austin Phillips, Caleb Phillips, Darien Ortiz, Emilia Ortiz, Abigale Sanders, Braxton Osborn, Aubrei Smith, Dante Smith, Anaiya Smith, Leah Dickneite, Isabella Dickneite, and Benjamin Dickneite; great-great-grandchildren, Damian Napier, Eden Brooks, Haden Sheraden, Tyler Napier, and Sage Hardig; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Merritt was preceded in death by his son, Michael L. Strickland; daughter, Terri Lynn Strickland Hurley; and siblings, Paul Strickland, Spencer Strickland, Donald Strickland, Opal Harlow, Eva Knicker, Francis M. Strickland, and Gladys Wall.
Merritt proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II. His greatest passion in life was preaching The Gospel. Merritt has served in several churches in the area including Powers General Baptist, Wells Chapel General Baptist, Victory General Baptist, and Marlow General Baptist. His other love was carpentry. He had done home construction and remodeling and had worked as maintenance supervisor at Mt. Vernon Holiday Inn and Rome Meadows Apartments in Dix. Merritt enjoyed building flag cases for local veterans. He also loved fishing and hunting. In all of these endeavors, his love for people was very evident. His heart for people and his love for Christ were reflected in his lifes work. Merritt did not suffer or fear death, but held fast to the promise of salvation and the joy of meeting his savior and the promise of everlasting life. Rejoice and believe!
