Jean's Story

Jean M. Rettig, 85, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 7:45 A.M. September 11, 2017 at White Oaks Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Mount Vernon, Illinois. He was born August 22, 1932 in Norwood, Ohio to Raymond G. & Margaret E. (Harwood) Rettig. He married Patricia Pat Mindrup on October 13, 1956 at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Saint Louis, Missouri and she preceded him in death on December 5, 2015.
Mr. Rettig is survived by his children, Steve Rettig of Springfield, Illinois, Sandy Tagliavia of Boca Raton, Florida, Michael Rettig and wife, Melissa of Saint Louis, Missouri, and Kevin Rettig of Mount Vernon, Illinois; eight grandchildren, Stephanie Abshire and husband, Dustin of Houston, Texas, Jason Heafner and wife, Alisha of Kansas City, Missouri, John Tatum and wife, Brittany of Houston, Texas, Michael Tatum and wife Rachel of Pattison, Texas, Tricia Gillespie and husband, Michael of Pattison, Texas, Katelyn Tagliavia of Boca Raton, Florida, Meghan Rettig of Saint Louis, Missouri, and Sarah Rettig of Saint Louis, Missouri; four great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Rettig was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughters Patricia Rettig and Cindy Tatum; and brothers Raymond Rettig and Lt. Paul Rettig.
Jean served in the United States Air Force from 1953 until 1955 during the Korean War. He was a member of Saint Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Project Excel, and Knights of Columbus. He volunteered for Good Samaritan Hospice, Good Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary, Lifeboat Alliance, and the local soup kitchen. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. Monday, September 18, 2017 at Saint Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois.
A Memorial Mass will be held 10:00 A.M. Monday, September 18, 2017 at Saint Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois with Father John Iffert officiating.
Inurnment will follow at St. Mary Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois.
Memorials may be made to the Good Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary.
