James Burrell Shelton, 71, of Dahlgren, passed away at 1:25 A.M. Friday, September 16, 2016 at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro, Illinois.
He was born Saturday, March 10, 1945 in Jefferson County, Illinois, son of Burrell and Evelyn (Carroll) Shelton. Jim married Lila May Wilson on March 21, 1969 at their new home in rural Bonnie, Illinois. In attendance were both sets of parents and Francis Wilkey. Reverend Ray Wilkey of Belle Rive, Illinois preformed the ceremony.
In addition to wife of 47 years, Jim is survived by daughter, Tonya Sue and husband Jeff Green of Marion, Illinois and son, James Christian "Chris" Shelton and his son Lane both of Dahlgren, Illinois. Also surviving are a grandson, his wife, a great granddaughter, and a great grandson of Marion, Illinois. He also leaves three sisters-in-law, Molly Wilson of South Carolina, Marion Wilson of Florida, and Lois Wilkerson of Belle Rive, Illinois, and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Jim was preceded in death by son, James Rayburn Shelton, a grandson, his parents, his wife's parents, a sister-in-law, five brothers-in-law, and a special aunt, Carrie Baker of Bonnie, Illinois.
He graduated from Waltonville High School in 1962.
Jim worked at General Radiator, Old Ben Coal Mine #26, and worked several years for Dahlgren Township Road Commissioner Clarence Parr until Parr's retirement. He was elected Dahlgren Township Highway Commissioner in 1997, the position he still held. In April of 2017 Jim would have had twenty years of service to the township.
Jim loved his work. He also loved the great outdoors. He loved fishing, hunting, and riding four-wheelers with his "little buddy", grandson, Lane.
Per his request there will be no visitation and no service. He will be cremated and the family will bury his ashes in the family plot at South Hickory Hill Cemetery, south of Mount Vernon, Illinois at a later date.
