Evelyn's Story

Evelyn L. Walker, 96, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 1:10 A.M. Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at Residential Living Center in Mount Vernon, Illinois. She was born February 2, 1920 in Jefferson County, Illinois to parents, Rolla D. and Ora E. (Hayes) Connaway. She married James Nelson Walker on June 30, 1937 in Nashville, Illinois, and he preceded her in death on August 9, 1996.
A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, October 14 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon with Reverend Victor Long officiating. In honor of the family's wishes, Evelyn will have private interment services at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
A Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. Friday, October 14, 2016 at Hughey Funeral Home.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter: Janet Bradley and husband Ken of Jacksonville, Illinois; two grandchildren: Andrea Smith and husband Chris of Frederick, Maryland and Christopher Lee of Carbondale, Illinois; great granddaughter: Abbey Lee Girardeau of Savannah, Georgia; and granddaughter-in-law: Cathy Lee Girardeau of Savannah, Georgia. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Her parents, husband, son: James F. Walker, grandson: Anthony "Tony" Lee, two brothers: R.J. Connaway and B.B. Connaway, and sister: Pauline Ledbetter preceded her in death.
Evelyn graduated from Mount Vernon Township High School, class of 1937. She owned and operated Walker's Market near the City Park for 25 years with her husband. She was a member of First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, and she volunteered at Horace Mann Grade School.
