Athena N. Hassakis, 89, of St. Louis passed away on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at Delmar Gardens West in Chesterfield, Missouri. She was born on October 16, 1927 in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, the daughter of Nicholas Demetrius and Efstathia (Karpouzi) Hassakis, both of whom preceded her in death along with her two sisters Despo Pavledes and Lula Hassakis and her brother, Demetrius (Jim) Hassakis.
She attended Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri. Athena lived in St. Louis from November 1950 to July 2008, where she was an active member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, serving on the Parish Council for eight years. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, cooking/entertaining, playing the piano, needlepoint and knitting. She worked for World Wide Sports, Ltd., for 57 years, retiring as an administrative assistant.
Athena is survived by several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 4967 Forest Park Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63108. Funeral services will follow at 10:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, with Fr. Doug Papulis and Fr. Michael Arbanas officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Luke Greek Orthodox Church, 1510 Audubon, Columbia, MO 65201 or to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Facility Improvement Fund, 4967 Forest Park Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63108, will be appreciated.
