William "Bill"'s Story
William Henry "Bill" Piper, 87, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 11:08 P.M. October 30, 2017 at Green Tree in Mount Vernon, Illinois. He was born August 4, 1930 in Mount Vernon, Illinois to Henry Downer and Dorothy Louise (McLaughlin) Piper. He married Mary Marguerite Dare on February 7, 1948 in Nashville, Illinois.
Bill is survived by his wife, Mary Marguerite Piper of Mount Vernon, Illinois; sons, Benny Eugene Piper and wife, Sheila of Mount Vernon, Illinois and William Bradley Piper of Fort Myers, Florida; grandsons, Todd Alan Piper and wife, Gail of Mount Vernon, Illinois and Ryan Glen Piper and wife, Stephanie of Mount Vernon, Illinois; great grandchildren, Benjamin Charles Piper, Christopher Hoyt Piper, Maggie Michelle Piper, and Eli Glen Piper; brother, Thomas Piper and wife, Cuma of Mount Vernon, Illinois; and sister, Nancy Phillips and husband, Joe of Gallatin, Tennessee.
Mr. Piper was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Mike Piper; sisters, Mary Ann Linn and Janice Shurtz; and grandson, Christopher Eugene Piper.
Bills hobbies included, tractor pulling, boat racing, hunting, fishing, bowling, playing golf, and watching NASCAR racing. Bill and Marguerite farmed for many years, he was a Landman for several oil companies, and had his own timber business. He was a member of Central Christian Church, a Past Master of Jefferson Lodge #638, Past President of Jefferson County Shrine Club, Past President of Jefferson County Krazy Klowns, and original founder of Jefferson Chapter #686 O.E.S. He was a past member of White Shrine of Jerusalem, Past President of Eagles, Past President of Demolay Advisory Board, Secretary and Charter Member of Dodds Pendleton Coal Association, a Kentucky Colonel, past member of Jesters, and first volunteer of Jefferson Fire District. He was nominated for Outstanding Young Farmers of Illinois, was a past member of Mount Vernon YMCA board, past member of Farm Bureau, member of Surround of Bunker Hill, member of the York Rite and Scottish Rite, and a 4-H Club Leader for several years. He was a Former member of the Moose Lodge and past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge # 819, a member of the Local Musicians Union, member and Past Potentate of Ainad Temple of East Saint Louis, Illinois, and won the Lifetime Member Award TSAP.
Visitation: 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, November 3, 2017 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Shrine Walk Through will be held at 7:30 P.M. Friday during the visitation. Funeral Service: 10:00 A.M. Saturday, October 4, 2017 at the Chapel at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, Illinois with Mr. Randy Sells officiating.
