Thelma Joyce Hughey, 73, passed away October 10, 2017. She was born November 24, 1943 in Mount Vernon, Illinois to the late Harrison and Mildred (Karch) Hughey. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother-in-law who she was very close to, Paul E. Huffer III in 2015.
Thelma came to Tampa in 1985 from Mount Vernon. She was Catholic and earned her Master's degrees in Math and History from the Southern Illinois University. She was a reading teacher for 49 years impacting thousands of students over her career.
Thelma, along with her sister and brother-in-law, traveled extensively throughout the United States. Thelma was a HUGE St. Louis Cardinals Fan.
Left to cherish her memory are her brother, Harrison A. Hughey, Jr. and his wife, Becky of Mount Vernon, Illinois; sisters, Ellen Havelka and her husband, Milford of Marthasville, Missouri and Mildred Huffer of Thonotosassa, Florida; along with many nieces and nephews.
There will be a visitation from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. Thursday, October 19, 2017 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, October 20, 2017 at Saint Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois with Reverend Andrew Knopik officiating. Interment will follow at Oddfellows Cemetery in Opdyke, Illinois.
Memorials may be made to Jefferson County Animal Shelter in loving memory of Thelma Joyce Hughey.
