Samuel "Sam" Harper Kirk, 86, of Sesser passed away peacefully on Sunday June 18, 2017 at the Shawnee Christian Health Center in Herrin.
A Memorial Service will be on Sunday June 25, 2017 at 6:00 PM at the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser. Visitation will be on Sunday June 25, 2017 from 5:00 PM until 6:00 PM at the funeral home. It was Mr. Kirk's wishes to be cremated. There will be a private graveside service at a later date.
Sam was born May 10, 1931 in West Frankfort to Burton and Zeala (Harper) Kirk. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Lou Keller, on November 4, 1950. They shared 58 years of marriage. She passed away in 2009.
He leaves behind one son and five daughters Charles Kirk and wife Judy of Mayfield, KY, Judi Prather and husband Ron of Christopher, Kathleen Willmore of Bonnie, Susan Frassato and husband Rick of Sesser, Connie Wanack of Sesser, and Nancy Hester and husband David of Dix. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren Ryan Curry, Kelley Kirk-Jansen and husband Brian, Jana Cox, Gretchen Pool and husband Charles, Scott Kirk and wife Desiree, David and Mitchell Kirk, Ashley Gockel, Kirk Tate, and Drew and Miriam Hester; 5 great grandchildren Serenity and Lucas Kirk, Jordan and Ariana Curry, and Cayden Thiele; one sister Darlene Spiller of Hot Springs, AR; one sister-in-law Shirley Rainey of Carlyle, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, two sisters, one brother, and two sons-in-law.
Mr. Kirk was a retired farmer. Before his health declined he enjoyed working in his yard and garden, washing and waxing his automobiles and watching basketball on TV. Sam was honored in 2006 with induction into the Mt Vernon High School Sports Hall of Fame. He was a player on the MVTHS basketball team that won the Illinois State Basketball Championship in 1949. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home.
