Reflections of the Life of Robert Edward Harris, Sr.
Robert Edward (Bob) Harris, Sr. stepped over the threshold that we call death on February 6, 2017 at 5:00 A.M. with his family at his bedside at his home 1013 Herbert Street in Mount Vernon, IL to a room in our Father's Mansion in Heaven. He had acquired the age of 77 Years, 11 Months, and 27 Days here on this earth. He was born in Mount Vernon, IL to Ora Lee Bruin and Robert Harris, Sr. on February 10, 1939. He attended Washington Grade School and graduated from Mt. Vernon Township High School. He accepted Christ as his Savior at an early age at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church when it was on Vault Street here in Mount Vernon.
He married Alma Mitchell on November 27, 1959 in Mt. Vernon and to this union 5 children were born, Robert Edwards Harris, Jr. of Phoenix, Arizona, Keith (Tyeast) Harris, Kathy Harris, Telly (Ravon) Harris, and Stacey Harris all of Mount Vernon.
He worked several years for the Mt. Vernon Stove Foundry and Jim Firebaugh Meat Company as a butcher before becoming a coal miner with Inland Mines in Waltonville, IL which later became Rend Lake Mines which was operated as Consolidated Coal Company in Sesser, IL.
In 1999 he became a member of the newly formed New Life Missionary Baptist Church of Mt. Vernon, where he served on the Trustee Board for 10 years, joining the choir singing, and playing the piano and drums.
On June 29, 2001 in Hopkinsville, KY, he married Margaret Hawks Mitchell. He also expanded his family with 6 step-children, Sandra Miller of Hopkinsville, KY, William (Cyah) White, Sheila (Antonia) Stuckey, and Rosemary White all of Mt. Vernon, Robert (Angel) White of Carbondale, and Timothy (Laura) White of Bowling Green, KY.
February 2, 2002 Bob decided it was time to retire and enjoy life. He loved gardening and whatever it took to make his property picture perfect.
He is survived by his loving wife; 5 children; 6 step-children; 17 grandchildren; 36 step-grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and 59 step-great-grandchildren; a special niece, Denise Harris of Louisville, KY; nephew, Bruce Harris of Mount Vernon; along with a host of nieces; nephews; and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Hal Roach; sister, Peggy Harris; and granddaughter, Jessica Harris.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2017 from 9:00 A.M. until funeral service time, 11:00 A.M. at New Life Missionary Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois with Reverend Delano Scott officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, Illinois.
