Robert J. Bass, Jr., 96, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 12:50 A.M. September 7, 2017 at Nature Trail Health Care Center in Mount Vernon, Illinois. He was born March 13, 1921 in Vicksburg, Mississippi to the late Robert and Evelyn (Armstrong) Bass, Sr.
Robert is survived by his son, Alfred Reed of Chicago, Illinois; nephews, Jesse Bass of Accokeek, Maryland, Samuel Caldwell of Washington D.C., William Bass of Lockport, Illinois, and Lawrence Caldwell of Laurel, Maryland; nieces, Kay Woodgett of Mount Vernon, Illinois and Cheryl Thompson of Mount Vernon, Illinois; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-nieces, and great-nephews; and special friend, Kenny Akins.
In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his siblings, Ida Caldwell, Ella Davis, Lee Bass, Jesse Bass, Leon Bass, and Samuel Bass.
Robert proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois. Robert worked as a chauffeur for many years and retired from the United States Government Service Administration in Washington D.C. His greatest joy was spending time with his family. Robert was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
A Graveside Service will be held Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at Oakwood Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois with Reverend Ronald Lash officiating. The American Legion Post #141 will conduct Full Military Honors. Interment will follow. Memorials may be made to Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church.
