Kenneth R. "Kenny" Stewart, 84, of Mount Vernon, passed away quietly at his home at 4:17 A.M. Thursday, October 6, 2016. He was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County.
Kenny was born Sunday, August 14, 1932 in rural Jefferson County to the late Paul G. Stewart and the late Clara H. Stewart. He married Susan Peckenpaugh on January 2, 1952 and she preceded him in death in 2008.
Kenny was a farmer in McClellan Township, purchasing and farming the land that had been in the Stewart family since the early 1900s. He graduated from Mount Vernon Township High School in 1950 and served from 1952-1954 in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He attended Southern Illinois University for three years and obtained a teacher's certificate. He taught school for several years at Campground Elementary and Waltonville High school, but decided to use his mathematical skills in the construction industry. He worked for over 25 years for the J.L. Allen Company in Tuscola, Illinois. He traveled all over the Midwest doing survey work and construction of pipelines.
He enjoyed being in the company of family and neighbors - always going the extra mile to help someone out. He was also very involved in local politics, serving many years on the McClellan Township Board of Trustees and the Jefferson County Board.
He loved his farm, continuing the traditions learned from his father and grandfather. He raised Hereford Cattle, pigs, sheep, and chickens over the years but his favorites were his horses. From the time he was a small boy, he always had a horse and was riding up to about a year before his death. He once commented that he wished he had lived back in the "Old West" days when cowboys were king.
Kenny is survived by four children: Pamela Robbins and husband Bill of Fairfield, Illinois; Dr. Steven Stewart and wife Dr. Linda of Woodbury, Minnesota; Laura Foell and husband Bill of Schaller, Iowa; and Julia Cullison and husband Keith of Stuart, Florida. He has eight grandchildren: Emily Robbins Clark and husband Walter, Curt Robbins and wife Stacey, Tom Foell, Mary Foell, Andrew Stewart and wife Megan, Melanie Stewart, Shane Cullison, and Trent Cullison. He also has eight great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his siblings: Doris England, Dwight Stewart and wife Sue, Kay Puckett and husband Mick, and David Stewart and wife Connee, all of whom are from Mount Vernon.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his sister: Glenda Lunn, and brother-in-law: Charlie England.
