John Warner "Hondo" Howard, 61, of Mt. Vernon, Illinois passed away at 1:20 p.m. November 27, 2017 at his residence in Mt. Vernon. He was born September 5, 1956 in Mt. Vernon to John and Ann Warner Howard II. Hondo married Cheryl Lewis Howard on September 4, 2005 in Mt. Vernon.
In addition to his wife, Hondo is survived by his parents, John and Ann Warner Howard of Mt. Vernon; sisters, The Reverend Nancy Howard Hardin and husband, Eddy, of Urbana, Ohio and Barbara Howard Lommen and husband, Gerald, of Ballwin, Missouri; nephews, John Russell Hardin and Paul Howard Hardin and wife, Brittney; nieces, Catherine Ann Katie Lommen and Sarah Elizabeth Lommen; stepchildren, Lauren Maddie Lewis, Chloe Alexis McGuire, and Lilly Gabrielle McGuire; and step-grandson, Jaxson Wyatt Lewis.
Hondo worked as a cement mason. He received the first Construction Management certificate given by Rend Lake College. Hondo was an avid sports fan, especially when it came to the St. Louis Cardinals. He lettered in football at Mt. Vernon Township High School. Hondo was a member of the YMCA and of Trinity Episcopal Church. He had a very easygoing personality and never met a stranger. Hondos greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends. He was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
Visitations will be held Friday, December 1, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, December 2, 2017 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. A funeral service will be held Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Hughey Funeral Home with The Reverend Father Ben Hankinson officiating. Interment will take place at Oakwood Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, YMCA, Jefferson County Historical Society, Oakwood Cemetery, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
