George's Story

George Harry Bryant, Sr., 88 years old, of Mt. Vernon passed away 11:10 A.M. Saturday, October 14, 2017 at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon, Illinois. George was born on March 17, 1929, in Mount Vernon, son of James Olin Bryant and Agnus Mable (Meyer) Bryant. He married Virginia B. Vursell on March 13, 1955 in Mount Vernon, Illinois and she preceded him in death on December 26, 1999.
George is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, George H. Bryant, Jr. and Debbie Bryant of Opdyke, Illinois; James Paul Bryant and Tammy Bryant of Franklin, Indiana; grandchildren, Rachel Nicole Taylor and husband Adam of Goose Creek, South Carolina, Kristin Jean Spears and husband Paul of High Ridge, Missouri, Benjamin Jaccob Bryant of Greenwood, Indiana, Emily Claire Ray and husband Josh of Franklin, Indiana, and Taylor James Bryant of Seattle, Washington.
Great grandchildren, Eliza June Taylor, Willow Grace Taylor, Ezekiel James Taylor, Judah Josiah Taylor, Charlotte Claire Ray, Toby Carter Ray, Ethan Jaccob Bryant, Aidric Dean Spears, and Gwendolyn Marie Spears; brother, John L. Bryant of Dallas, Texas; sister-in-law, Dorothy Randall of Mount Vernon, Illinois; brother-in-law, Steven Vursell of Champaign, Illinois; multiple nieces and nephews; and special friend, Colleen Rubenacker of Mount Vernon, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Belle Bryant; parents, James Olin and Angus Mable Bryant; brothers, Paul David Bryant and James Olin Bryant; and the Bryant infant twins.
He was a lifelong member of Wesley United Methodist Church; serving as a teacher, youth coordinator, and faithful servant. He was a song leader throughout his life from the days of "Youth For Christ" to leading songs more recently at Green Tree Nursing Home. He also served as president of the Bethel Grade School Board. His passion for serving the youth, and his love for basketball, was ever present as he served for many years coaching Mount Vernon Church League basketball teams. He was a veteran of the Korean War. He worked at Mount Vernon Stove Foundry. While working at Precision National he served as the Union Representative for the I.A.M. He installed and maintained furnaces along with home repairs in addition to his full-time jobs. He was a proud citizen of Mt. Vernon and avid Rams basketball fan. George never met a stranger he didn't know and enjoyed telling them about his loving savior, Jesus Christ.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, October 19, 2017 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois with Reverend Jesse Hinds officiating. Interment will follow at Old Shiloh Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois. Members of the Mount Vernon American Legion Post #141 will conduct Full Military Honors at the cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois.
