Frederick Homer Macnamara, 93, formerly of Spring Hill, FL and Mt. Vernon IL, died peacefully on August 27, 2017 in Austin TX. Fred was born in Springfield, IL on June 23, 1924 to Homer P. Macnamara, M.D. and Mabel Cowdin Macnamara. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Margaret Miller, in 1944. She passed away in 2007.
Fred was drafted into the Army in 1943, serving in France and Germany with Troop B, 94th Calvary, 14th Armored Division. He was awarded the Silver Star for his actions on March 23, 1945. Later commissioned as an officer, he was recalled to active duty during the Korean War and "gratefully remained stateside" as a training instructor. He resigned from the National Guard in 1961 as a 1st Lieutenant.
After WWII, Fred attended the University of Illinois, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in General Studies. Fred and family lived in Springfield IL, Chattanooga TN, and Mt. Vernon IL. From 1965 until 1989, he was the owner and operator of Rend Lake Chemical Company. In 1995, he and Mary retired to Spring HiIl FL. Fred loved travelling, was an avid golfer, and was active in the Shrine and Elks Club.
Fred is survived by his children Sally Macnamara, Evanston IL, and Olin (Ginny) Macnamara, Austin TX; grandchildren Katy (Jack) White, Chicago IL, and Casey Johnson, Denver CO.
A memorial service and celebration of Fred's life will take place at 11:00am on September 16 at Merritt Funeral Home in Spring Hill. At a later date, his ashes will be buried with Mary's at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.
