Doris Mamie's Story
Doris Mamie Alice (Bandy) Riley
Doris Riley, age 90 of Salem, IL went to be with her Lord and Savior about 2:00am at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, IL on Friday, September 29, 2017. She was born on November 3, 1926 at home on the Kell Road the youngest daughter of Jess Alexander and Jessie Icel (Byars) Bandy. She was named for both grandmothers, Mamie (Hawkins) Byars and Alice (Sorrells) Bandy. On January 18, 1948 she married Floyd Dell Riley, and he preceded her in death on July 21, 2011.
Mrs. Riley is survived by her children: Judy (Riley) Queen and husband Larry; Jack Riley and wife Jeanine; Vickie (Riley) Malan and husband David; and Ron Riley all of Salem, Illinois. Grandchildren: Lori (Queen) Van Horn and husband Dan and their children Payton Daniel, and Karsyn Danielle of Carbondale, IL; Angela (Malan) El-Zawahry (Dr. Ahmed) and their children Adam and Zackaria "Zico" of Springfield, IL; Amber (Malan) Neilson and husband Todd and their children Trenton and Logan of Troy, IL; Jason Riley and wife Sarah of Sun Prairie, WI and Justin Floyd Riley of Rantoul. Mrs. Riley was lovingly known as "Aunt Pete" to nephew: Mike Garlinghouse and wife Linda of Murphysboro and their children and niece Linda Truitt and husband Gail and their children of New Lenox. She is also survived by sister in-law Mary Ann (Riley) Beal and husband Wayne; brothers in-law: Billie Riley and wife June of Dix and Harry Riley of Effingham.
Mrs. Riley was a lifelong member of Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Iuka. She graduated from a one room grade school and from Salem Community High School. She began working at Brown Law Office in Mt. Vernon, prior to her marriage, she and Floyd owned Riley Oil and Supply better known as Conoco, she worked at Marion County Abstract. She then retired from Salem Wal-Mart after 20 years. She was a member of the PGMB Quilting Ladies and made many lap robes, a member of Marion County Geneology Society, The Happy Hearts Quilting Guild in Salem, and the Marion County Home Extension.
She was preceded in death by her brother William Ivan Bandy in WWII in New Guine, her sister Verna Lois Garlinghouse- Finn and her husbands Maurice Garlinghouse and later Jim Finn; sisters in- law Dorothy McBride, Aline Tate, Nellis Smith and Betty McCoy; brothers in-law Oscar, James, and Johnny Riley Jr.
Visitation will be Sunday October 1, 2017 from 4-7 pm at Rogers- Atkins Funeral Home in Salem with the funeral service on Monday October 2 at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Iuka at 11:00 am with services officiated by Lance Tate. Burial will follow at the County Line (Zion Grove) Cemetery in Kell. Memorials can be made to Zion Grove Cemetery mowing fund.
