David R. Scruggs, 87, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 6:17 P.M. April 21, 2017 at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon, Illinois. He was born August 30, 1929 in Charleston, Illinois, the third child to parents, Doctor Walter and Ruth (Burk) Scruggs. David married Virginia M. Adair on October 18, 1953 in Charleston, Illinois. They were blessed with 62 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on February 11, 2016.
A Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 25, 2017 from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois.
A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois with Pastor Terry Edwards officiating. The American Legion Post #141 will conduct full military honors. Interment will be at Rose Lawn Cemetery in Charleston, Illinois at a late date.
David is survived by his son, Brian Scruggs of Mount Vernon and Brian's special friend, Cindy Hopkins.
David was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Eugene Scruggs and Wanda Scruggs.
David proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He was a veteran of the South Pacific War and also served in Korea. David worked as an office manager of Jefferson Loan Company for 16 years and then Credit Thrift until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and the American Legion. David had a wanderlust and traveled and worked all over the United States as a young man. He was a hobbyist and loved to wood carve, build and fly radio controlled planes, hunt and fish, but most of all, he liked to travel and be with friends. David was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
